The English cigar comes from the Spanish cigarro, which in cycle derives from the Mayan word for tobacco, siyar; see the entry for cigarro at the Spanish Elevated Academy's information superhighway dictionary.
The embargo prohibited US residents from legally purchasing what were treated the finest cigars on the market, and Cuba was deprived its major customer for tobacco.
